I’m still on a high.

I’ve been in all-day meetings this week.

If there’s a purer form of hell than the all-day, every-day meeting, I really don’t know what it is.  We sit at nice tables, have too-strong coffee, and talk around problems.  Or, as we call them in the corporate world, “challenges.”

I saw a book title recently, “On Bullshit.”  There’s also a recently-published dictionary of corporate BS terms.  Both should be instant best-sellers.  If there was any justice in the world.

Of course, if there were any justice in the world, there wouldn’t be all-day, every-day meetings.  Which means we’re both SOL, I guess.

On the plus side, the Red Sox won the World Series.

Woo Hoo!

I have to say that I don’t particularly care about Britney Spears. Really about any celebrities. I’ve voluntarily removed myself from caring about teenagers with too much money and not enough sense.

But I saw that Britney lost visitation privileges. I probably believe that she really loves her kids, and so I feel sorry for her that she can’t see them. I know that I have children that if I couldn’t see them, I’d go batty.

What I love about this story is the last line:

Both parents were ordered to remain sober around their children.

Seriously, a judge has to order this?

Is it me, or is there a real lack of common sense on the Left Coast? I guess that’s why they call it La-La Land.

It took me a good, long while.  And I missed the train, and have to wait an hour for the next one.  But if you know me at all, you know that I really don’t care about any of that stuff, as long as in the end, I get what I want.  Which I did.  So I’m going home now.

Hey there. I’ve been so swamped that I haven’t posted. And, honestly, I might be done with the whole blogging thing. I know that I’m no Sarah, who’s been blogging every day for a long time, but I’ve blogged under several different names, including one that actually made it pretty high up the rankings (without being a really famous blog). Even now I’m on a call. And I’m pretty flippin’ tired because I was up until 2am: I played tennis until 10:15pm, and couldn’t wind down.

On the other hand, I had two glasses of Kix cereal last night: ‘Mmmmmm good.

By the way, my daughter, she of the curls, cut her curls off. She’s excited; I was ready to cry.

You might notice a new sidebar widget: ALDH.  It stands for—you might have already guessed it—Amplify Love, Dissipate Hate.  I’ll let you know each day whether the turnstile I went through was the one with the sticker.

Because that’s what bloggers do, that’s why.  Tell you insignificant details of their lives, as if you deeply cared.  Deal.

Today’s lesson: actions have consequences.

Everything we do has consequences. The cycle of action–reaction is immutable. Every action has a consequence. What today’s lesson is about is the types of consequences.

Consequences fall into three categories: those you’re aware of, those you aren’t aware of, and those you can’t be aware of.

Let’s start in on these types of consequences. Just to provide a framework, let’s consider one action: moving a glass of water from the table to the sink.

If I move the glass, there are consequences I’m aware of: the glass will no longer be on the table. The air flow will not be obstructed on the table. Those are the physical consequences I’m aware of. There are non-physical consequences, though. My wife will be momentarily pleased by my cleanliness, is one example. I’m aware of that, too.

There are consequences I’m unaware of. Someone was relying on the glass being there, for some reason. My wife had set the glass there so my daughter didn’t have to climb up on the shelf to get it. I’m unaware of that.

Then there are consequences I couldn’t be aware of. Such as, I move the glass to the sink, my wife comes and reaches her hand into the sink, and hits the glass, breaking it and cutting herself. That’s a consequence of my moving the glass, but it’s one step further removed from my action…there’s no way I can—or should—be able to plan for it.

In life, you should weigh the first, try to plan for the second, and keep the third in mind. But don’t let things you can’t be aware of frighten you into inaction.
